New Chair Holders Announced

Head of School Mr. Patrick Gallagher announced four teachers as new chair holders, recognizing them for their creativity and commitment to their work. Named chair endowments at US allow the school to retain outstanding and dynamic faculty by providing additional support and professional development opportunities to its chair holders. University School has 18 funded endowed chairs.

Mr. Enrique de la Mata was awarded The Richard A. Hawley Chair for Creative Arts. Upper School art teacher Mr. de la Mata was presented this award (in part), "For his embrace of all the dimensions of his work with the boys of US, in and out of the studio; For his appetite for continuous professional growth, as he expands his expertise conscientiously and continuously."

Mr. Matt McCarter was presented with The W. Hayden Thompson ’45 Chair for Exceptional Faculty Leadership. In presenting the award, Mr. Gallagher said of Mr. McCarter, "(He) is a man of intelligence and integrity, who not only seeks connection with students in his care but also strives to connect their learning with the real world."

Mrs. Susan McClellon was awarded The Rowland P. McKinley, Jr. Chair for Teaching Excellence. An excerpt from her citation reads, "For her students, she is an intellect of the highest caliber; a wellspring of energy and creativity; a tireless booster and patient guide by the side; and an educator whose greatest success—whose only success—comes with that of her students."

Mr. Peter Millett was presented with The Albert L. Waldron Chair in Classics. Mr. Gallagher, in presenting the award, said of him, "In him, boys see the classical education exemplified. He is knowledgeable, congenial, thoughtful, worldly, and caring. From him, ideas flow, challenge, combine, assert themselves, and enrich understanding."
