Upper School (9-12)

From the Director of the Upper School

At University School, our faculty and staff commit to that line in our mission which calls us to participate in a community where “each boy is known and loved.”

Every faculty member, staff person, and student is a vital member of that community. Boys are not only inspired by our distinguished faculty—students lead and learn from each other. Whether in the classrooms or the hallway; in the science labs or around the oval Harkness table; in our commons areas or a silent nook of the library; on the field or the stage; in our forest or the woodshop; the buildings and grounds of our school are designed so that boys may sense multiple pathways to freely forge their own paths, to tell their own stories, to better understand and be themselves, together.

We work to help boys explore and discover different possibilities for who they are becoming, we work to help boys live by the values of our mission and our motto, and we work to help boys develop relationships that last a lifetime. I invite you and your family to visit our school community in action.

Sincerely,

Krystopher Perry
Director of the Upper School and Hunting Valley Campus

Spark an interest, ignite a passion.

University School is a community where you will thrive by developing your academic, athletic, and artistic talents. You will stretch yourself to master new skills. At University School, you are given the freedom to explore, create, and innovate in your own way. You will build lasting friendships with classmates and teachers. You will be encouraged to excel in areas that you are passionate about.

You will become a young man of outstanding character who is prepared for college & beyond.

Our teachers inspire

As masters of their discipline, our faculty inspire and mentor our students with integrity and compassion.

We take pride in our accomplished teachers who bring local, national, and international perspectives to our school. Authors, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, and mathematicians, US teachers practice what they teach.

Our teachers are talented mentors who care about the whole boy, his interests as well as his abilities, his personal concerns as well as his school performance. Our class sizes are small, averaging 12-14 students. The relationships between faculty members and students are exceptional. Each US boy is matched with a faculty sponsor who is a continuing source of guidance throughout his high school years. These highly qualified, creative educators, most of whom hold advanced degrees, are deeply committed to their students.

Academic excellence

We are unlike any other private high school in Greater Cleveland.

Our liberal arts curriculum intertwines science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. With intentional guidance, students practice the skills and habits that form a solid foundation for their future in the global community: communication and collaboration; teamwork and leadership; critical and creative thinking; problem-solving and innovation.

Our students' only limit is their imagination, not resources. Spanning 220 acres of hardwood forest and fields, the Hunting Valley Campus centers on Kilroy Lake, a place to canoe, fish, or deploy a floating data-collection research robot. The grounds include an astronomical observatory, trout hatchery, apiary, and sugar house for boiling sap into our own syrup. The academic, arts, and music spaces are bright and comfortable, outfitted with furnishings and technology to support the teaching and learning process.

At US, boys are free to follow their interests where they lead and will uncover new passions along the way.
