Upper School Earns Outstanding School Science Award
The Upper School was presented the Harold C. Shaw Outstanding School Award as part of the 2024 Ohio State Science Day. This is the highest possible school and team achievement at State Science Day and is awarded based on high participation and project quality. US is one of only 12 high schools in the state to earn this distinction.
More about Mr. Harold Shaw from the Ohio Academy of Science
For 35 years, Mr. Shaw taught science in the Fairhaven, New Paris, West Elkton, and West Alexandria school districts. He embraced student research and organized and directed the area’s science day. His students received many honors and awards for their research projects at both the West District Science Day and State Science Day. For these efforts, West Alexandria HS was selected as the Frederick H. Krecker Outstanding Science Department.
Mr. Shaw was both a member of The Ohio Academy of Science and longtime supporter and contributor to the Junior Academy Council. In 1973, Mr. Shaw was honored by the OAS for his ability as a science teacher, his devotion to his students, and his service to the Junior Academy Council. Mr. Shaw was also recognized by the National Science Teachers’ Association and presented him with an award for preparing “Tomorrow’s Scientists and Teachers”.
