In October, Upper School Spanish teacher Mrs. Alondra Pacheco hosted a webinar for National Teach Spanish Week 2024. This annual event highlights the importance of language programs and the need for language teachers across the country. The interactive presentation, "Connecting Your Class to Free Outreach Opportunities for Teachers and Students" provided attendees the chance to hear about several programs that Mrs. Pacheco has implemented in her classes and with the US chapter of Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Aura. Mrs. Pacheco earned a Distinguished Teacher Certificate for the 2023-2024 academic year for her exceptional commitment to continuous professional growth, mentorship, and the advancement of language education.
In November, Ms. Emma Royan, Grades 3 & 4 Learning Specialist, presented at the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE). Along with some of her colleagues from Kent State University, Mrs. Royan, a doctoral candidate, presented on how writing can build communities both among students and teachers in hopes of gaining more voices for the Writers Who Care blog. Ms. Royan is a reviewer for this blog and hopes to publish her own work there soon. Ms. Royan attended various sessions and met authors and researchers to improve her own practice and brought these learnings back to share with Lower School teams. Highlights of the conference included the keynote speakers, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Kate McKinnon, and Bryan Stevenson.
